Washington/Los Angeles: President Donald Trump’s response to protests in the streets over his strict immigration policy has escalated once again as the US military will temporarily send about 700 Marines to Los Angeles until more National Guard troops can arrive.
Hundreds of protesters gathered outside a federal detention facility where immigrants have been detained on Monday, marking the fourth day in a row that protests have taken place in Los Angeles.
In order to help safeguard government personnel and property until additional National Guard forces could arrive on the location, the US military announced that a battalion would be dispatched. According to a US official who spoke on condition of anonymity, the Trump administration is not currently using the Insurrection Act, which would let troops to directly engage in civilian law enforcement.
