Ottawa’s invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the G7 conference in Alberta has angered members of Canada’s Sikh community who were told by police that their lives were in danger and who believe the Indian government is to blame for the threat.
India is not a member of the G7, but Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney invited Modi to attend as a guest at the summit, which begins on Sunday. Modi will be visiting Canada for the first time in ten years, and Carney, a political novice, will be put to the test diplomatically.
Since former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused the Indian government in 2023 of being involved in the June 18, 2023, murder of Sikh separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada, ties between Canada and India have been tense.
