PUERTO AYORA: Following Wednesday’s strong 8.8 earthquake off the Russian Kamchatka peninsula, people throughout the Pacific were compelled to gather what they could and flee for their lives.
From Japan to South America, the enormous earthquake sparked tsunami warnings, which caused havoc as millions of people fled to safer ground. The waves crashed into ports and closed beaches.
It was among the most powerful earthquakes ever observed. Waves as high as four meters (12 feet) were created by the earthquake.
Although the first earthquake was the strongest since 2011, when 15,000 people were killed in Japan, it only caused minor damage and minor injuries.
However, millions of people were placed on high alert as tsunami warnings were issued for over a dozen countries.
