Ahead of US envoy Steve Witkoff’s trip to Moscow, Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelensky has stated that he and Donald Trump talked about defense cooperation, drone production, and sanctions against Russia.
Zelensky praised Trump for “productive” talks Tuesday, saying Moscow was especially “sensitive” to the possibility of sanctions.
Trump has previously threatened to impose severe sanctions or secondary sanctions on all parties involved in commerce with Russia if it does not reach a ceasefire agreement with Ukraine by Friday.
Witkoff is anticipated to meet with Vladimir Putin during his visit to Moscow on Wednesday.
Although spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated last week that the Russian economy had “developed a certain immunity,” the Kremlin has largely avoided Trump’s threat of sanctions.
