WASHINGTON: As President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived in Washington on Monday for negotiations aimed at ending the war with Russia, US President Donald Trump declared that Ukraine will not be regaining Crimea or joining NATO.
Zelensky, who has consistently refused to give up territory, will meet Trump in Washington on Monday with Ursula von der Leyen, the head of the European Commission, and other officials.
The meeting comes after Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin met in Alaska on Friday, when they made commitments to give Ukraine “robust security guarantees” but were unable to reach an agreement on a ceasefire.
Trump shifted to the long-held Russian stance after Zelensky was not invited to the Alaska summit.
