“Proud” that the party has approved the resolution, Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar declared. However, Sir Keir Starmer, who has advocated for a “sustainable” ceasefire in its place, disagrees with the party branch.
At the party convention in Glasgow, all delegates supported calls by Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar for an early halt to the Israel-Hamas war.
At the conference, he informed delegates that “the fighting must stop now” and stated on X that he was “proud” the party had approved the motion.
The Labour motion, which was passed without opposition, demands an end to rocket fire into and out of Gaza, the unconditional release of hostages held by Hamas, the replenishment of vital supplies, and the establishment of a peace process.
It further stated that there was “no justification for the collective punishment of 2.2 million citizens in Gaza” and denounced Hamas’s attacks on Israel on October 7. It also acknowledged Israel’s right to defend its residents.
