According to Minette Batters, the head of the NFU, farming must be regarded “as one vital part of our national infrastructure” by the incoming government. In an attempt to capture the rural vote before the general election, political parties are present at the NFU convention.
Prior to the start of the annual NFU conference on Tuesday, Minette Batters, the organization’s chief, stated that housing, tree planting, and climate planning are increasingly having to fight with food production for land and resources.
The number of agricultural enterprises has decreased by 7,000 since 2019. “If we don’t take food production seriously… we will lose those farm businesses,” she stated to News.
Whoever leads the next administration, Ms. Batters pleaded with them to “treat it as one vital part of our national infrastructure.” Avoid treating it like the weak relation.
As with house building and tree planting, the NFU wants the government to set targets for the amount of food produced in the UK.
