Paolo Taviani, a renowned Italian director, died at the age of 92 on Thursday, February 29, 2024.
According to Variety, Taviani and his late brother, Vittorio, created the prestigious filmmaking tandem in 1977 and are most known for winning the Cannes Palme d’Or Award for their movie, Padre Padrone.
The filmmaker died in a Rome facility following a brief illness, according to local Italian media reports.
“Paolo Taviani, a great maestro of Italian cinema, leaves us,” Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri tweeted on his X account, which was previously known as Twitter.
The Taviani brothers “directed unforgettable, profound, committed films that entered into the collective imagination and the history of cinema,” according to Gualtieri’s homage.
Paolo and Vittorio, often known as the Taviani Brothers, rose to prominence in the 1970s as a prolific partnership whose works were distinguished by modern narrative with a neo-realism twist.
The directors made their impact in the entertainment world with films including Padre Padrone (1977), The Night of the Shooting Stars (1982), and the Luigi Pirandello adaptation Kaos (1984).
