In a daring daylight robbery in Bengaluru, armed men disguised as officials from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) made off with 70 million rupees ($800,000). The gang intercepted a cash transport van moving money between bank branches in Karnataka’s capital city on Wednesday afternoon.
According to Bengaluru Police Commissioner Seemant Kumar Singh, six men in an SUV stopped the van, claiming they needed to verify the documents for transporting the large sum. The robbers forced the cash custodian and security guards to leave their weapons and enter the SUV, while the driver continued driving the van.
After following the van for several kilometers, the gang forced the driver out, transferred the cash at gunpoint, and escaped. Investigators revealed the SUV had a fake license plate and a “Government of India” sticker. Authorities are examining whether the heist involved multiple vehicles or if any employees of the cash transport company were complicit.
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah confirmed the SUV used in the robbery has been recovered. Home Minister G Parameshwara noted that the suspects likely switched vehicles during their escape.
This incident follows a recent high-profile robbery in May, when 59 kg of gold worth over 532 million rupees was stolen using a duplicate locker key. Police have recovered part of the stolen gold and cash, arresting 15 suspects, including former bank employees.
Authorities have launched a massive search operation and are optimistic about catching the criminals soon.
