National Highways said it evacuated more than 12 million gallons of water – enough to fill nearly five Olympic-sized swimming pools – from the site along the eastbound lane at Newmarket in the past week.
Disruption on the Suffolk-Cambridgeshire border began on February 22nd, causing several hours of delays for some motorists as the highway was reduced to one lane.
The A14, which connects with Felixstowe port in Suffolk, is one of the UK’s main freight arteries, and several haulage businesses have described the lengthy delays as a “shambles”.
Lane one is closed “for the time being” between junctions 37 and 38, while lanes two and three “remain open” as National Highways works with other partners and the Environment Agency to “resolve the issue”.
