If Everton’s 2-0 victory over Liverpool at home in the Merseyside derby was reason enough to celebrate after their first victory since October 2010 was, they will also look back on the beautiful bonus of maybe causing irreversible damage to the opposition.
This much was evident as a lanky, lackluster Liverpool team hammered their heads against the formidable Everton defense and excellent goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, amid the cries of “You Lost The League At Goodison Park” reverberating around the storied old stadium.
It was exactly 39 years to the day after what is arguably the most well-known occasion in Goodison Park’s history—the crushing defeat of Bayern Munich in the European Cup Winners’ Cup semifinal.
Naturally, this victory pales in comparison to the significance of the evening that Everton supporters will cherish forever, while Liverpool will like to forget it. Should they succeed in doing so, there will be ample evidence of the royal blue persuasion willing to remind them.
