PESHAWAR: According to a federal agency’s assessment on Saturday, there was “negligence” by the police in the lynching of a man in Swat on charges of blasphemy. The law enforcement officials made the “grave mistake” of moving the suspect to the Madyan Police Station.
A local tourist was killed by a violent mob on Thursday night after they accused him of desecrating the Holy Quran. The Madyan Police Station and the foreigner’s body were later set on fire. A number of police officers sustained injuries as a result of the police station being ransacked.
It claimed that neither the station house officer (SHO) at the aforementioned police station moved the suspect to a “safe” location nor followed orders from higher up on the subject.
It further said that one of the reasons for the loss was the absence of senior police officers and political figures during the mob violence.
The report states that two motorcycles and five automobiles were set on fire during the arson, which reportedly left 11 people injured, including five police officers.
Additionally, amid the violence, the SHO’s quarters and the deputy superintendent of police (DSP) office sustained damage.
In an effort to locate and apprehend mob members, the relevant authorities launched an inquiry. According to a recent report, “the suspect denied committing blasphemy in police custody.”
