In an effort to strengthen relations between the two countries, Pakistan on Friday congratulated UK Prime Minister-elect Keir Starmer on his party’s resounding victory in the general elections in Britain.
With 650 seats, Starmer’s center-left Labour party secured a commanding majority. Voters punished the Conservatives under Rishi Sunak for a slew of scandals, poor public services, and rising living expenses, resulting in the worst showing in the party’s lengthy history.
Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar wrote on X, “I extend my heartfelt felicitations to @Keir_Starmer, Leader of Labour Party @UKLabour on the historic victory in parliamentary election in United Kingdom.”
Pakistan wants closer UK connections following Keir Starmers’ victory.
He pointed out that there are strong, wide-ranging linkages between Pakistan and the UK that are based on shared history and interpersonal interactions.
“I am confident that under his stewardship our relationship will be further strong and we can work together for global peace, prosperity and development,” he said.
This election’s outcome has turned British politics upside down. The Conservatives, the most successful party in the west, lost over 250 legislators, including a record number of senior ministers and former prime minister Liz Truss, while Labour gained over 410 seats, an increase of over 210.
A sullen Sunak accepted defeat and said he would publicly step down later, meeting with King Charles prior to Starmer taking over.
