ISLAMABAD: Power distribution company (DISCO) employees and officials who charge customers for “extra units” on their bills would face consequences, according to a directive issued by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to the relevant authorities on Saturday.
The prime minister gave the Federal probe Agency (FIA) instructions to begin a probe against these DISCO executives and instructed the electricity division to suspend them right now.
The orders came from a meeting on the electricity sector reforms and solarization process that PM Shehbaz led, according to a statement from the PM Office.
Minister of State Ali Pervaiz Malik, federal ministers Jam Kamal Khan, Sardar Awais Khan Leghari, Ahsan Iqbal, Ahad Khan Cheema, Attaullah Tarar, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, and other officials attended the meeting.
In addition to uncovering those who had transferred excess units to the protected consumers category, utilizing fewer than 200 units per month, the prime minister declared that officials who had added extra units to the monthly bills of customers with their anti-public attitude should be punished exemplary.
The prime minister urged the relevant authorities to step up their efforts to develop renewable energy sources for power generation during the meeting, stating that Pakistan could no longer afford to produce electricity using fuel imported from abroad.
Additionally, he reaffirmed his commitment to not absolve the impoverished community of the consequences of past policy missteps.He ordered the immediate closure of power plants run by the government that were inoperable and those that were generating costly electricity.
