KARACHI: At least 31 structures in the city have been designated by the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) as having the ability to accommodate about 5,000 cars in parking spaces.

The SBCA performed a survey that revealed the existence of these 31 commercial and trade centers that are being used unlawfully throughout the city, and the results were included in a report that was made in response to the city’s Commissioner Syed Hassan Naqvi’s orders to enhance traffic flow.

According to the study, the city’s traffic problems will improve and residents will be able to use the parking facilities without any difficulty if these parking spots are solely used for parking cars. The report states that all of these buildings’ parking lots are being used for business and other purposes. At least twenty buildings’ worth of parking spaces are in use as godowns, stores, and other business spaces.

It further stated that ten additional buildings had stores attached to them, and three buildings’ parking lots had been transformed into mosques.

Three buildings’ parking lots are still closed because of their poor state of repair.

The report further stated that unauthorized usage has been observed in the old city region from MA Jinnah Road to Abdullah Haroon Road, as well as seven buildings’ parking areas in the city’s south sector.
