Elliot Giles has succeeded the 30-year-old 1500m world champion from 2022.
Wightman earned 800m silver in the 2022 European Championships, but has missed three major competitions due to injury.
A foot injury stopped him from defending his world title in Budapest in 2023, and he missed the UK Championships in June of this year due to a calf ailment.
Wightman stated before the Olympics that injuries would not jeopardize his chances of winning a gold.
“You don’t lose the qualities you had,” he told me. “If you’re not out there performing and demonstrating your abilities, people will forget about it.
It’s nicer for me to be able to sneak in under the radar and not have the pressure of everyone wanting me to win or be the best in the world.
On Wednesday, Giles, 30, will compete in the 800m heats alongside Max Burgin and Ben Pattison for Britain.
The final takes place on August 10th.
