Despite having one of the largest foreign student marketplaces in the world, the country will only be able to accept 270,000 new students by 2025.
The administration said on Tuesday that each higher education institution will have a unique limitation, with providers of vocational education and training bearing the brunt of the cuts.
The move has infuriated the tertiary education sector; some universities have referred to it as “economic vandalism,” but Canberra claims it will enhance the industry’s lifespan and quality.
As of early 2024, government statistics indicate that approximately 717,500 international students are enrolled at Australian universities.
Education Minister Jason Clare acknowledged that during the epidemic, Australia sent overseas students home and enforced strict border controls, which had a negative impact on higher education.
However, he also pointed out that, while the number of international students at private vocational and training providers has increased by 50%, the number at universities has increased by 10% since the start of COVID-19.
Mr. Clare stated that although students are returning, so are the sharks, who are looking to take advantage of this business to earn quick money.
