As temperatures rise over 35C, parents in some of the hottest cities in China have urged schools to install air conditioners.
After a heated discussion in Changsha, a city in southern China, the education department responded by stating that air conditioning will not be installed so that students might “cultivate the spirit of hard work and endurance”.
Online users were incensed by the comment, which sparked a discussion on who should pay for the air conditioners and if they should even be utilized.
“Global warming has become so serious,” another person wrote. What actions do you wish the kids to take?

The majority of Chinese classrooms use ceiling fans rather than air conditioning.
However, in recent months, calls to install them have gotten louder.

The father of a junior high school student in Guangdong, southern China, Lin Yujun, told Sixth Tone that it would be difficult to focus on studying without air conditioning.

Installing air conditioners is not something that all parents support. Concerns have been raised by some over the increased danger of contracting colds or other illnesses in air-conditioned classrooms. The school calendar has been proposed to be changed by others.

In past years, September has never been this hot. Depending on the weather, the education board could be able to prolong the school holidays, a parent in Chongqing told News.
