As the nation pursues an ambitious campaign to host the 2036 Olympics, Indian sport is struggling to shed its reputation as one of the top drug offenders in the world.
The amount of Indian athletes using performance-enhancing drugs has drawn criticism from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the nation’s top athlete.
Neeraj Chopra, the 2021 Olympic javelin winner, came clean earlier this year.
He told local media that “doping is a big problem among our athletes in India” and advised them to “eat well, rest well, and work hard” instead.
Following the IOC’s criticism of India’s dismal performance, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) established a new anti-doping body last month.
