34 Dead After Strong Japan Earthquake
Authorities in Kumamoto prefecture said on Thursday that 34 people have died as a result of the strong earthquake that struck southwestern Japan.

Aeon Mall Collapse Sparks Rescue Efforts
Search and rescue efforts have involved the deployment of thousands of troops. At Kashima’s Aeon retail center, one of the worst-hit structures, where part of the second floor fell, many people are searching among the debris.
The mall’s cat café said on Wednesday that all 25 of the cats it had left behind during the pandemonium of the earthquake had been successfully retrieved.
Japan Quake Strikes Buildings and Factories
Kumamoto’s Aeon mall, which was damaged by an earthquake, reopened as a redesigned shopping center last month. It had already sustained damage during a string of powerful earthquakes that struck the area in April 2016 and claimed 278 lives.
In Yatsushiro City, rescuers were also searching a Nippon Paper facility that had partially collapsed after the earthquake, killing at least five people.
According to a statement released by Nippon Paper on Wednesday, seven of the eleven persons who were trapped in the building have already been rescued.
Residents in Kumamoto were startled by the earthquake, which had a shallow depth of 10 km (six miles).
