KABUL: Twenty-four hours after a statewide blackout was enforced, the United Nations urged Taliban leaders in Afghanistan on Monday to promptly restore internet and telecommunications throughout the nation.
On the directive of its commander, Hibatullah Akhundzada, the government started cutting off high-speed internet access to a few provinces earlier this month in an effort to stop “vice.”
On Monday evening, the internet service and mobile phone reception were reduced to less than 1% of normal levels.
The diaspora overseas is unable to transfer vital remittances to their family, online businesses and financial systems have halted, and Afghans are unable to communicate with one another.
