YORK: The upstart campaign of democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani is unlikely to be slowed by New York City Mayor Eric Adams’ decision to halt his faltering reelection attempt, political observers said Monday.
With five weeks until election day, Mamdani, a 33-year-old member of the state assembly who was born in Uganda, has polled significantly higher than his primary opponent, former New York state governor Andrew Cuomo. President Donald Trump’s constant attacks on Mamdani may only help him gain favor with New Yorkers who disapprove of the president’s policies.
Harris and other party stalwarts have endorsed Mamdani’s candidacy, which has been booming since he pulled off a surprising upset in the June primary to become the Democratic Party’s standard bearer in the general election on November 4.
