Karamat Ali formerly supplied milk to his multigenerational family from his cows and buffalos. The 61-year-old, however, sold roughly a dozen cows earlier this year and used the money to buy a set of solar panels.
The Punjabi rice farmer now powers a tube well—which consists of a motorized groundwater pump and a water well—with his solar panels. Ali can now more easily water his crops thanks to the technology, which also eliminates his reliance on the unstable electrical system and expensive diesel to run the pump.
“Water supply to my paddy feed is smoother than before,” he stated.
Farmers like Ali are rapidly switching from diesel and grid power to sun-powered tube wells as the nation experiences a solar revolution.
