As France commemorates the 10th anniversary of the Bataclan terror attacks, the nation is reminded that the jihadist threat remains ever-present.
Authorities recently arrested Maëva B, a 27-year-old French convert to Islam, on suspicion of planning a violent attack. She had been corresponding with Salah Abdeslam, the sole surviving perpetrator of the November 2015 attacks, who is serving a life sentence near the Belgian border. Investigators discovered that Abdeslam had used a USB device containing jihadist propaganda, traced back to his meetings with Maëva B.
Further investigations of Maëva B’s phone and computer revealed evidence suggesting she may have been plotting an attack with two associates, who are now also under judicial investigation.
Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez emphasized that the jihadist threat in France remains high, with six planned attacks already thwarted this year.
The Bataclan attacks on 13 November 2015 were among the deadliest in France’s recent history. Coordinated assaults included suicide bombings outside the Stade de France during a football match, shootings at nearby bars and cafés, and a hostage-taking massacre at the Bataclan concert hall during an Eagles of Death Metal performance. Three attackers at the Bataclan detonated explosives as police intervened, leaving a lasting mark on the nation’s memory.
This anniversary serves as a solemn reminder of the dangers that persist and France’s ongoing fight against terrorism.
