The UK has signaled that military measures are ready after a Russian spy vessel, the Yantar, aimed lasers at Royal Air Force pilots during a monitoring mission.
DefenseDefence Secretary John Healey described the incident as “deeply dangerous” and said the UK is prepared to respond if the Yantar, which gathers intelligence and maps undersea cables, poses a threat. The ship is currently near British waters off northern Scotland.
“This marks the first time the Yantar has targeted RAF pilots, and we are taking it extremely seriously,” Healey added, noting changes to the Navy’s rules of engagement to closely track the vessel’s movements.
In response, the Russian embassy in London dismissed the UK’s concerns, insisting its actions are not aimed at undermining British security and urging restraint to avoid escalating tensions in Europe.
