Thailand Temporarily Lifts Afternoon Alcohol Ban to Boost Tourism

Thailand lifts its afternoon alcohol ban for six months, allowing sales from 11 AM to midnight to boost tourism and support economic recovery.

Thailand has temporarily ended its longtime afternoon alcohol ban to help attract more tourists and boost the economy. For the next six months, bars, shops, and restaurants can sell alcohol from 2pm to 5pm a big change from the rule that had been in place since 1972.

Under the new trial policy, alcohol can now be sold daily from 11:00 AM until midnight, giving visitors more flexibility during their stay. Previously, anyone caught breaking the afternoon ban could face fines of up to 10,000 baht. The original restriction was created to prevent government workers from drinking during office hours, but the rule often frustrated tourists visiting Thailand, a country famous for its nightlife and party culture.

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, who took office in September, aims to revive tourism and stimulate the economy after years of political challenges. Deputy Prime Minister Sophon Saram said the old concerns about government employees sneaking off to drink are outdated.

Thailand also ranks among the countries with the highest alcohol consumption rates in Asia, with popular local brands like Chang and Singha attracting both locals and tourists.
