Zara Embraces AI in Fashion Imagery
Zara has joined the growing number of fast-fashion brands using AI to generate images of real models wearing different outfits. This approach speeds up the production process and reflects a broader industry shift that could change fashion photography.
Swedish rival H&M has already experimented with AI by creating digital clones of models for marketing campaigns. European online retailer Zalando is also leveraging AI to produce imagery more efficiently.
AI Complements, Not Replaces, Creative Teams
A spokesperson for Zara owner Inditex said, “We use artificial intelligence only to complement our existing processes. We work collaboratively with our valued models, agreeing on every aspect, and compensate them according to industry standards.”
According to a CityAM report, an unnamed model confirmed that Zara requested approval before editing their images with AI to showcase different clothing. The model received payment equal to that of a regular photoshoot.
H&M and Zalando have echoed this approach, emphasizing that AI supports creative teams rather than replacing them. They aim to improve efficiency while maintaining the roles of photographers, models, and production staff.
Marta Ortega and Zara’s Photography Legacy
Inditex chair Marta Ortega, daughter of founder Amancio Ortega, has long championed fashion photography. Since 2021, her MOP (Marta Ortega Perez) Foundation gallery in A Coruna has hosted exhibitions highlighting iconic photographers. Current shows feature Annie Leibovitz, while past exhibitions included Steven Meisel and Helmut Newton, both of whom Zara has worked with extensively.
Ortega has also worked to reposition Zara upmarket. The company now focuses on fewer, larger flagship stores with a more spacious and sophisticated design.
Industry Concerns Over AI
Isabelle Doran, CEO of the Association of Photographers in London, warned that AI could reduce commissions for photographers, models, and production teams. This shift could affect established professionals and make it harder for early-career fashion photographers to gain experience.
The Future of AI in Fashion
As AI becomes more common, fashion brands must balance efficiency with ethical practices. Zara’s approach shows that AI can support creative work while respecting the rights and compensation of models. The coming years will reveal how widely this technology reshapes the fashion ecosystem.
