President Donald Trump honoured the late Rep. Doug LaMalfa, R-Calif., during his speech to House Republicans on Tuesday, after learning of the congressman’s sudden death earlier that day. Initially, Trump almost cancelled the address at the Trump-Kennedy Centre but chose to deliver it in LaMalfa’s memory.
Trump Remembers LaMalfa as Loyal Ally
Trump praised LaMalfa for consistently supporting him in votes. In addition, he noted that he never needed to call on the congressman to rally his backing. “He was a fantastic person. He was just with us. He was our friend. All of us, every one of us,” Trump said during the speech.
LaMalfa’s Life and Service
Rep. LaMalfa, 65, died Tuesday morning. Meanwhile, House Majority Whip Tom Emmer, R-Minn., confirmed LaMalfa’s passing on X and offered condolences to his family. “Doug was a loving father and husband, and staunch advocate for his constituents and rural America,” Emmer said.
Conservative Champion and Colleague
California’s 1st Congressional District in the northern part of the state and chaired the Congressional Western Caucus. Furthermore, he actively championed conservative causes and treated both reporters and fellow lawmakers with kindness.
Impact on House Republicans
This death reduces the Republican majority in the House to 218–213. As a result, Republicans can now lose only two votes on legislation to maintain a party-line majority. Therefore, his passing may influence how future bills move through the House.
