KARACHI: In spite of his father’s worries about his future, a lack of gear, and the untidy waves close to Karachi, Attiq Ur Rehman is adamant about pursuing his goal of being Pakistan’s first professional surfer.
“The money isn’t important to me at the moment. The 21-year-old dismisses his father’s entreaty to take up fishing in order to marry and provide for his family, saying, “I just want to compete.” “It’s my surfer attitude.”
Rehman’s family is from a low-income coastal town in southern Pakistan. They often work as lifeguards or fishers, keeping an eye on the wealthier Karachi residents who come to the beach for a day.
To support a family of ten, his father earns the equivalent of $100 per month.
