More than 160 million people across the United States are preparing for a powerful and dangerous winter storm. The system is expected to arrive on Friday and last through the weekend.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the storm will bring heavy snowfall, freezing rain, and extreme cold. As a result, officials warn of life-threatening conditions in many regions.
Arctic Blast Brings Severe Cold and Wind Chills
The storm will push an Arctic air mass across large parts of the country. Temperatures will drop well below zero in several areas.
In addition, strong winds will make conditions even worse. Wind chills in the Northern Plains could fall below -50°F (-46°C). These temperatures greatly increase the risk of frostbite and hypothermia.
Heavy Snow to Cover Major US Cities
The storm will move slowly from west to east. Along the way, it will blanket many major cities with snow.
Cities at risk include Memphis, Nashville, Washington DC, Baltimore, Philadelphia, and New York. Meanwhile, heavy snow will spread from the Southern Rockies and Plains into the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast.
The NWS reports that areas from Colorado to West Virginia and up to Boston could receive more than one foot of snow.
Travel Disruptions Expected Nationwide
Because of the severe weather, transportation officials warn of major travel problems. Airports in several large cities expect delays and cancellations.
Many airlines are already allowing passengers to change flights without extra fees. However, officials strongly advise avoiding travel if possible.
Meteorologists say driving could become nearly impossible during the peak of the storm.
States Declare Emergencies Ahead of the Storm
In response, several governors have declared states of emergency. These include Arkansas, Georgia, Texas, North Carolina, and South Carolina.
This step allows emergency teams and National Guard units to mobilize quickly. Authorities want to prepare for power outages, road closures, and rescue operations.
Cold Weather Extends Into Canada
Meanwhile, Canada is also experiencing severe winter weather. Freezing temperatures already grip much of the country.
Snowfall is expected in eastern and Atlantic regions early next week, according to Canadian meteorologists.
