The only nation to vote against a United Nations resolution advocating for the abolition of all kinds of violence against women and girls online was Argentina.
The South American country contended during Thursday’s UN General Assembly session that the resolution used vague phrases like “hate speech,” “misinformation,” and “disinformation” that may be used “abusively” to stifle free speech.
Thirteen countries, including Iran, Russia, Nicaragua, and North Korea, abstained from voting, leaving 170 countries in favor.
In an effort to disassociate Argentina from the UN-sponsored 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda, Argentine President Javier Milei has been a strong opponent of the international organization, accusing it of attempting to “impose an ideological agenda.”
