ISLAMABAD: On Wednesday, the National Assembly’s Parliamentary Affairs Committee adopted a bill that will modify the Elections Act 2017 to prevent legislators from subsequently altering their party affiliation.
Eight panelists voted in favor of the bill, four against it, and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) MNA Shahid Akhtar did not cast a ballot.
The question of reserved seats and independent members joining any political party, according to Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar, is straightforward.
According to Ali Muhammad Khan of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), the law minister shouldn’t support this bill since it is a private member’s bill.
Legislator Bilal Azhar Kiyani of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) introduced the bill on Tuesday.
