Due to a malfunctioning Horizon IT system manufactured by Fujitsu, over 900 sub-postmasters were falsely accused of embezzlement and found guilty of crimes between 1999 and 2015; many of them are still seeking restitution.
On Tuesday, the investigation into the scandal was presented a letter from Paul Patterson, the European head of Fujitsu, to Nick Read, the CEO of the Post Office, dated May 17.
Mr. Patterson put the following in it: “I am writing to you directly to express major issues that I have noticed that suggest the Post Office is still pursuing enforcement actions against postmasters.
Just to be clear, Fujitsu will not back actions taken by the Post Office against postmasters.”
Mr Read responded by claiming the corporation does not and will not initiate charges against sub-postmasters as a prosecutorial authority, adding there are “fundamental misunderstandings at [Fujitsu] about Post Office’s current-day culture and activities”.
Additionally, the CEO of the Post Office, who just tendered his resignation, informed Mr. Patterson that Horizon data was not being utilized for “civil recoveries from postmasters.”.
