KARACHI: Awais Qadir Shah, MPA of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), was sworn in as speaker of the Sindh Assembly on Sunday, while Anthony Naveed was appointed deputy speaker after a majority of MPs voted for them.
KARACHI: Awais Qadir Shah, a member of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), was sworn in as speaker of the Sindh Assembly on Sunday, while Anthony Naveed was appointed deputy speaker after a majority of MPs voted for them.
Qadir Shah won the job with 111 votes, while his opponent, Sofia Saeed of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P), received only 36.
After his election, incumbent Speaker Agha Siraj Durrani delivered an oath to incoming Speaker Qadir Shah.
Meanwhile, Naveed received 111 votes, while Rashid Khan of the MQM-P received only 36. Qadir Shah delivered an oath to Naveed, who was thereafter sworn in as deputy speaker.
Today’s session began with a short delay, after which some members of the provincial assembly took oath.
However, members of the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) boycotted the election of a new speaker and deputy by abstaining from casting their votes.
Ahead of the voting for the speaker, outgoing speaker Durrani briefed the members about the polling process.

Following his win, Shah thanked PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, Co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari and Faryal Talpur for their support.
