Condom Prices Expected to Rise Amid Global Supply Disruptions The world’s largest condom manufacturer, Karex, is preparing to raise prices as the ongoing Iran war continues to disrupt global supply chains. The company’s CEO, Goh Miah Kiat, said costs have increased sharply, forcing the firm to consider price hikes of up to 30% or even higher if the situation does not improve. Karex produces over five billion condoms each year and supplies major international brands as well as public health systems. However, rising production expenses are putting pressure on the company’s pricing strategy. Oil Supply Crisis Driving Production Costs Higher The conflict has severely affected global oil flows, especially through the Strait of Hormuz. This key route usually carries a large share of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas. Disruptions in this region have increased the cost of oil and related materials. Karex depends on oil-based inputs such as ammonia and silicone. Ammonia helps preserve latex, while silicone is used in lubricants. As oil prices rise, these materials become more expensive, directly impacting manufacturing costs. Shipping Delays and Rising Demand Add Pressure Shipping delays and higher freight charges are making the situation worse. At the same time, global demand for condoms has increased by around 30% this year. This combination of strong demand and limited supply is pushing prices upward. Goh explained that economic uncertainty often leads to higher demand. Many people prefer to delay having children during unstable times, which increases the need for contraception. Wider Impact on Global Consumer Prices The effects of the conflict are not limited to condoms. Airline ticket prices have also increased, with economy fares rising significantly compared to last year. Disruptions in the Gulf region have raised fertiliser costs and caused shortages of helium, which is important for chip manufacturing. Other industries are feeling the pressure as well. Bottled water producers, for example, are struggling to secure raw materials due to supply chain issues. Outlook Remains Uncertain If the conflict continues, more industries could face similar cost increases. For now, consumers may need to prepare for higher prices on everyday products, including essential health items like condoms.

Travelers could also face more cancellations if the situation does not improve. Middle East Supply Disruptions Impact Europe The Middle East plays a key role in global jet fuel supply. It provides about half of Europe’s aviation fuel imports. Much of this supply passes through the Strait of Hormuz. Iran has restricted access to this route in response to recent military actions. This has caused delays and reduced fuel availability. The International Energy Agency recently warned that Europe could face jet fuel shortages within weeks. However, UK officials and airlines say they have not yet seen major supply disruptions. Lufthansa Adjusts Network Strategy Lufthansa confirmed it will scale down its European routes. However, it will continue to operate long-haul international flights. The airline said this move will improve efficiency and reduce fuel use. It expects to save around 40,000 metric tons of jet fuel. Fleet Changes and Route Cuts The airline has also decided to speed up the closure of its CityLine operations. It plans to retire 27 aircraft as part of this move. Lufthansa said higher fuel costs and ongoing labor issues influenced this decision. Some of the first route cuts have already started. South Korean Fighter Jets Collide Mid-Air After Pilots Attempt Aerial Photos A recent investigation in South Korea has revealed that a mid-air collision between two fighter jets in 2021 was caused by pilots trying to capture photos and videos during a mission. The incident took place near the central city of Daegu and involved two F-15K aircraft from the country’s air force. What Happened During the Flight According to findings released by the Board of Audit and Inspection, the jets were returning to base after completing their mission. During the flight, one pilot, flying as the wingman, decided to take photos using his personal phone. He wanted to mark his final mission with his unit. Taking such photos was reportedly common among pilots at the time. The pilot had even mentioned his plan during the pre-flight briefing, which suggests the practice was informally accepted. The Maneuver That Led to the Collision While taking photos, the wingman pilot suddenly changed position. He climbed higher and flipped the aircraft to get a better angle for the camera. This move brought the jet dangerously close to the lead aircraft. At the same time, the lead pilot asked a colleague to record video footage of the wingman jet. As the aircraft moved closer, the lead jet attempted a quick descent to avoid contact. Despite this effort, the two jets collided mid-air. The crash caused damage to both planes. The lead aircraft’s left wing was affected, while the wingman jet suffered damage to its tail stabiliser. Fortunately, all pilots survived without injuries. Financial Damage and Investigation Outcome The collision resulted in repair costs of around 880 million South Korean won, which equals roughly $596,000. Initially, the air force held the wingman pilot fully responsible and demanded he cover the entire cost. However, the pilot appealed this decision. He argued that the lead pilot was aware of the filming and did not stop it. After reviewing the case, the audit authority reduced the fine to 88 million won, placing partial responsibility on the air force as well. The report stated that the military failed to set clear rules about personal camera use during flights. This lack of regulation contributed to the risky behavior. Disciplinary Action and Aftermath Following the incident, the wingman pilot was suspended from duty. He later left the military and moved into a career in commercial aviation. The case has raised concerns about safety standards and discipline within the air force. It also highlights the risks of distractions during critical operations.
