Overview of the latest situation
Israeli forces launched strikes in southern Lebanon’s Nabatieh region after issuing evacuation warnings to residents. Despite ongoing violence, a partial ceasefire framework between Israel and Hezbollah appeared to remain in place, with no reported attacks on Beirut.
The reported arrangement, announced in connection with US diplomatic efforts, included a pause on strikes against the Lebanese capital if Hezbollah refrained from targeting Israel. Following the announcement, Israel said it intercepted two projectiles fired from Lebanon toward northern Israel, while Hezbollah claimed it had attacked Israeli positions in the south.
Impact on southern Lebanon
Fresh airstrikes hit areas near Tyre, including zones close to Jabal Amel Hospital. Lebanese authorities reported four deaths and 127 injuries in the strikes. Medical staff were heavily affected, with dozens among the injured and several in critical condition.
The hospital area suffered major destruction. Buildings nearby were reduced to rubble, cars were damaged, and power lines were torn down. Inside the hospital, broken glass covered the floors and parts of the ceiling collapsed due to the blast shock.
Hospital officials said they were treating patients and displaced civilians when the strikes hit without warning. They also rejected claims that military targets were present nearby.
Hospital damage and civilian distress
The maternity ward was among the areas affected. A newborn baby, Fares, born shortly before the strikes, survived in the damaged facility while his mother recovered nearby.
Hospital staff described the incident as sudden and severe, saying the impact disrupted critical care services. Lebanese health authorities also reported that repeated attacks on medical facilities and emergency workers have caused heavy losses in recent months.
Military claims and counterclaims
The Israeli military stated it targeted Hezbollah-linked infrastructure in the area. It also acknowledged damage near the hospital but said the facility itself was not the intended target. Israel accused Hezbollah of operating within civilian areas, though it did not provide evidence to support the claim.
Hezbollah, on the other hand, confirmed it had launched attacks on Israeli forces in southern Lebanon as part of its response.
Rising humanitarian concerns
Health officials in Lebanon say medical personnel have faced increasing risk during the conflict. Hundreds of healthcare workers and paramedics have been killed or injured due to repeated strikes on ambulances and medical facilities.
