Third British National Suspected of Hantavirus on MV Hondius Cruise as Cases Rise Outbreak Overview on MV Hondius Health officials are monitoring a hantavirus outbreak linked to the cruise ship MV Hondius. A third British national is now suspected to have the infection. The case involves a passenger currently on the remote Atlantic island of Tristan da Cunha after the ship made a stop there in mid April. Two other British men already have confirmed infections. One patient remains in a stable condition in the Netherlands after evacuation from the ship. The second patient is in intensive care in South Africa following an earlier medical transfer. One passenger has died, and the total number of confirmed cases has reached five. Confirmed and Suspected Cases Authorities confirmed that the suspected third British case is under observation and has not yet been fully diagnosed. Two additional British nationals are self isolating at home in the United Kingdom. They show no symptoms and are isolating voluntarily after possible exposure. A group of 30 passengers from around a dozen countries disembarked earlier at St Helena on 24 April. Seven of them were British citizens. Four British passengers who left the ship remain on St Helena and continue to show no symptoms while staying in contact with health teams. Evacuation and Medical Response Medical teams evacuated three patients from the ship earlier in the week. Martin Anstee, a 56 year old retired police officer and expedition guide, was flown to the Netherlands along with a 41 year old Dutch crew member and a 65 year old German passenger. He is currently in stable condition and reports that he feels well. Health authorities plan to send medical support to remote island locations where exposed passengers are being monitored. Teams are focusing on early detection and containment to prevent further spread. Passenger Monitoring and Isolation Measures Passengers who remain on board the MV Hondius will be flown back to the United Kingdom via a chartered aircraft once the ship reaches the Canary Islands. Officials confirmed that all returning passengers will need to isolate after arrival, even if they show no symptoms. Health monitoring continues for all exposed individuals across multiple locations, including Europe, Africa, and remote Atlantic islands. Operator Response and Contact Tracing The cruise operator Oceanwide Expeditions stated that the first confirmed infection was reported on 4 May. The company also confirmed that all passengers who had disembarked were contacted and informed about potential exposure risks.

Three Killed After Mount Dukono Volcano Eruption in Indonesia Deadly Eruption Hits Mount Dukono During Hiking Trip At least three hikers lost their lives after Mount Dukono erupted on Friday morning in Indonesia. The volcano sent a huge column of ash nearly 10 kilometers into the sky, creating panic among hikers and nearby residents. The victims were part of a group of 20 hikers from Singapore and Indonesia who were climbing the volcano despite safety restrictions issued by local authorities. Rescue teams later evacuated the remaining members of the group and shifted them to nearby hospitals for treatment and medical checks. Officials confirmed that two Singaporean men, aged 27 and 30, died in the incident along with a local woman from Ternate. Rescue workers have not yet recovered the bodies because continuous eruptions and dangerous terrain are slowing the operation. Rescue Operation Faces Major Challenges Local police and rescue teams said strong volcanic blasts and falling ash have made it difficult to reach the crater area where the victims are believed to be located. Authorities temporarily stopped the recovery mission after nightfall and plan to continue the search on Saturday morning. Two porters from the hiking group stayed behind on the mountain to support rescue workers during the operation. Witnesses near the volcano reported that Mount Dukono continued releasing hot ash and volcanic material throughout Friday afternoon. A local resident helping rescuers said ash clouds and rocks were still coming out from the crater area for several hours after the eruption. Officials remain concerned because the volcano has shown continuous activity in recent months. Authorities Had Already Warned Hikers Indonesian authorities had repeatedly warned people not to climb Mount Dukono because of increased volcanic activity. The volcano has erupted more than 200 times since March last year, making it one of the country’s most active volcanoes. One hiking guide present during the eruption said pressure inside the volcano had likely been building for several days. He described Friday’s eruption as extremely powerful and dangerous. Eyewitnesses also reported that several other hikers were on the mountain when the eruption happened. Officials are now investigating how visitors managed to enter the restricted area despite safety warnings. Indonesia’s Volcano Risks Remain High Indonesia sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region known for frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. The country has more than 120 active volcanoes, and authorities regularly monitor volcanic activity to reduce risks for local communities and tourists. The latest Mount Dukono tragedy highlights the dangers of ignoring official safety warnings near active volcanoes. Rescue operations are expected to continue until all victims are recovered from the mountain.

Hantavirus Outbreak Reported on Atlantic Cruise Ship Incident Overview Health authorities have reported a serious hantavirus situation on a cruise ship sailing across the Atlantic Ocean. The vessel, MV Hondius operated by Oceanwide Expeditions, was traveling from Argentina toward Cape Verde when multiple passengers fell ill. Three people have died during the incident. A Dutch married couple and a German passenger were among the deceased. Officials have confirmed two hantavirus cases so far, including a Dutch woman who later died after leaving the ship. Investigations continue to determine the exact cause of the remaining deaths. Two crew members also developed breathing related symptoms while on board. One showed mild illness and the other required urgent medical attention. What Is Hantavirus Hantavirus refers to a group of viruses carried mainly by rodents. Humans usually become infected when they breathe in particles contaminated with rodent urine, droppings, or saliva. This virus does not typically spread from person to person. Infection usually happens in environments where rodent activity is present and contaminated dust becomes airborne. People may also get infected through rodent bites or scratches, but this is less common. How the Virus Spreads The main transmission route involves inhalation of infected particles in the air. When dried rodent waste is disturbed, it can release virus particles into the environment. Risk increases in enclosed or poorly cleaned areas where rodents live or have lived. Travel environments, storage areas, or remote locations can increase exposure risk if rodent control is weak. Symptoms and Health Risks Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome This form affects the lungs. Early signs include fever, fatigue, and muscle pain. As the illness progresses, patients may experience headaches, dizziness, chills, and stomach discomfort. Breathing problems can develop suddenly. In severe cases, the condition becomes life threatening. Health data shows a high death rate once respiratory symptoms begin. Hemorrhagic Fever with Kidney Complications This form affects the kidneys and blood vessels. Symptoms may include low blood pressure, bleeding inside the body, and kidney failure. It can become severe without fast medical care. Current Cases Under Investigation A 69 year old British passenger is currently in intensive care in South Africa and has tested positive for hantavirus. The Dutch woman who died after leaving the ship also tested positive. Health officials are still testing crew members who showed respiratory symptoms. Results have not yet confirmed whether they are infected with the virus.

Robots Step In as Waste Industry Struggles to Hire Staff Recycling Plant Faces Labour Shortage Challenges A busy recycling facility in Rainham, East London, is dealing with ongoing staff shortages in a tough working environment. The site is operated by Sharp Group, a family run waste management company. The plant processes around 280,000 tonnes of mixed recycling every year. Workers sort materials on fast moving conveyor belts where items like shoes, broken electronics, and construction waste pass by constantly. The job is physically demanding and noisy. Dust is present throughout the facility, making conditions even harder for staff. Safety risks are also a concern in this sector, which reports higher injury and illness rates compared to many other industries. High Turnover Continues to Pressure Operations Keeping staff has become a major challenge. The facility reports an annual turnover rate of around 40 percent. Line supervisor Ken Dordoy explains that many workers struggle with the pace. He notes that pickers are constantly working as the belt never stops for long, which leads to frequent staff replacements. To manage fatigue, workers rotate between different sorting tasks every short interval, and the belt is occasionally paused to give brief breaks. Robots Enter Recycling Workflows To address staffing issues, the company is testing automation. A humanoid robot called Alpha is being trained to assist with sorting waste. The robot has been developed by RealMan Robotics in China and is being adapted for recycling operations by TeknTrash Robotics in the United Kingdom. Unlike traditional industrial machines, this robot is designed to move in a human like way. Developers believe this approach allows it to work within existing facilities without major redesigns. Training the Robot to Sort Waste Alpha is still in early development and is undergoing training. It is learning how to identify different items on the conveyor belt and how to pick them up correctly. A worker uses a virtual reality headset to demonstrate sorting techniques. These movements are recorded to help train the robot. According to TeknTrash founder and chief executive Al Costa, the training process focuses on two main skills. The first is recognising materials on the belt. The second is learning how to handle and lift them safely and efficiently.

Met Gala Looks Inspired by Famous Artworks The Met Gala is known for turning fashion into a form of living art. Held every year on the first Monday of May, it celebrates the opening of the Costume Institute exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. This year’s theme, “Fashion is Art,” encouraged guests to express their personal connection between clothing and artistic expression. Celebrities arrived in bold, creative outfits that reflected famous artworks from history. Each look told a visual story shaped by painters, sculptors, and cultural symbols. Rosé Channels Georges Braque’s “The Birds” Rosé, member of Blackpink and a New Zealand born singer, wore a simple yet elegant black strapless gown designed by Saint Laurent under Anthony Vaccarello. The dress appeared minimal at first glance, but the inspiration behind it added depth and meaning. Her outfit took cues from Georges Braque’s artwork The Birds (1952–53). The design included a striking bird shaped brooch, which became the highlight of her look. This detail directly connected the outfit to Braque’s artistic style and symbolism. Rosé worked closely with stylist Law Roach, often called an “image architect,” to shape the final concept. Together, they studied Saint Laurent’s past collections, including designs from spring 1998 and spring 2002 couture. During this process, they discovered how Yves Saint Laurent frequently used bird motifs, which helped refine the final direction. She later shared that the look combined classic Saint Laurent elegance with artistic storytelling inspired by fashion history and fine art. How Art Shaped the Met Gala Theme The Met Gala theme encouraged designers and celebrities to treat fashion as more than clothing. Instead, outfits became interpretations of paintings, sculptures, and historical references. Each look aimed to reflect the human body as an artistic subject across different eras. From bold symbolism to subtle references, the red carpet became a space where art history and modern fashion blended together.

Zelensky Criticizes U.S. Diplomacy Disregard shown, says Volodymyr Zelensky, toward Ukraine as American diplomats choose Moscow over Kyiv. With visits unfolding in Russia while skipping the capital of Ukraine, irritation mounts. Peace efforts appear lopsided, seen through Kyiv’s lens. Attention shifts unequally, feeding discontent among Ukrainian leadership. Diplomacy feels unbalanced when one city receives envoys, another does not. On multiple occasions, US representative Steve Witkoff journeyed to Moscow, engaging in talks with Russian leader Vladimir Putin. Despite such meetings, a formal trip to Kyiv remains unfulfilled by him - similarly absent for Jared Kushner. Though contact exists at high levels elsewhere, Ukraine has not received their presence officially. The pattern continues without public explanation. Should talks be needed, Zelensky noted, Kyiv could accept them elsewhere. Meetings away from Ukraine might happen, given complications. Yet, when decisions touch Ukraine, presence in person holds weight. Engagement without participation lacks substance. Peace Efforts Slow as World Tensions Rise By late 2025, movement toward a truce began accelerating. Talks between American and Russian representatives explored an arrangement to halt hostilities. Still, certain conditions appeared disadvantageous from Kyiv's perspective. Eventually, Ukraine sought a place at the negotiation table. Following that, talks emerged with participation from every party involved. Come 2026, agreement appeared between Kyiv and Moscow on select military matters. Among these were arrangements about frontline locations alongside oversight mechanisms. Speed decreased shortly afterward. Attention turned elsewhere due to events in the Middle East. Involvement of American and Israeli forces targeting Iran diverted resources. Focus on Ukraine weakened as a result. Some Problems Still Prevent Deal Still, key disputes show no sign of closing. From the start of conflict, Moscow has removed minors - Kiev insists they come back. On another front, leadership shifts in Ukraine are a condition pushed by Russian officials. The main issue lies ahead, focused on Donbas. Control of eastern Ukrainian territories remains a goal for Moscow. This request meets firm resistance from Kyiv. Compromise appears distant between both parties. A step toward agreement appears distant, according to a Ukrainian representative. Despite repeated efforts, progress stalls because viewpoints differ sharply. One position faces another without movement. Dialogue continues, yet outcomes remain unchanged. Ukraine Awaits Continued U S Backing Even so, collaboration with the United States remains central for Zelensky. While recognizing changes in worldwide focus, he noted Kyiv continues to place weight on ties with Washington. Now taking part in discussions about Iran, American diplomats remain absent from Kyiv. Their involvement clarifies the reason, yet fails to calm unease among Ukrainians.

US Singer D4vd Charged in Murder Case Linked to Missing Teen Arrest and serious charges US musician D4vd, whose real name is David Anthony Burke, has been charged in connection with the death of a teenage girl who went missing last year. Authorities say he faces multiple charges including first degree murder, murder for financial gain, and murder of a witness tied to an investigation. Los Angeles prosecutors stated that the case involves complex allegations and disturbing details. Burke is scheduled to appear in court for arraignment in downtown Los Angeles. Disappearance of the victim The victim, 14 year old Celeste Rivas Hernandez, disappeared after she reportedly went to Burke’s home in the Hollywood Hills in April 2025. Officials say she was never seen or heard from again after that night. Her remains were later discovered in September 2025 inside the front trunk of a Tesla linked to Burke through registration details. Evidence described by investigators During a press briefing, the district attorney said investigators believe the victim was killed under circumstances involving planning and concealment. Prosecutors also claim the case includes allegations of financial motive connected to Burke’s music career. Officials further stated that evidence suggests the teenager may have been a witness in a separate investigation involving alleged criminal acts. They also described the condition of the remains as severely decomposed, which made the investigation more complex. Legal response from the defense Burke’s legal team rejected the accusations. They stated that he did not commit the crime and denied any responsibility for the victim’s death. His attorneys said the evidence will prove his innocence in court. Ongoing investigation and next steps Law enforcement officials confirmed that the case remains active. Prosecutors have not ruled out pursuing the most severe penalties available under the law. Authorities also addressed public criticism regarding delays in releasing information, stating that parts of the investigation were kept confidential due to legal sensitivity.

Cynthia Shange, South Africa’s Miss World Pioneer, Dies at Seventy Six Early life and rise to recognition Cynthia Philisiwe Shange was born on twenty seven July nineteen forty nine. She grew up during apartheid in South Africa, a system that restricted opportunities for Black citizens. Despite these barriers, she built a path into public life through beauty pageants and later acting. Breaking barriers in beauty pageants Shange gained national attention after winning Miss Africa South, a contest created because Black women were not allowed to enter Miss South Africa at the time. This achievement opened the door for her to compete internationally. In nineteen seventy two, she represented South Africa at the Miss World competition in London. She stood on the global stage during a period when apartheid shaped every aspect of her country’s identity. She finished in fifth place, making history as the first Black woman to represent South Africa at Miss World. Earlier challenges in the pageant system Before Shange’s participation, Pearl Gladys Jansen also competed internationally as Miss Africa South in nineteen seventy. Her entry caused controversy and highlighted the racial inequalities within global pageants during that era. Acting career and public life After her pageant success, Shange built a long acting career. She appeared in several productions over the years and became known for her strong screen presence. Her work helped expand her influence beyond pageantry into South African entertainment. Death and family tribute Shange passed away in hospital early Monday morning after an illness. She was seventy six years old. Her daughter, Nonhle Thema, confirmed the news and paid tribute to her mother. She described her as a compassionate and graceful woman who brought warmth and kindness to those around her. She also asked for privacy and prayers for the family during this difficult time. Funeral details have not yet been shared. Legacy Cynthia Shange is remembered as a trailblazer who challenged racial barriers during apartheid. Her journey through international pageantry and acting left a lasting mark on South African cultural history.

What Is the FISA Law and Why Is It Controversial Understanding the FISA Law The Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act of 1978 is a US law that controls how intelligence agencies collect foreign intelligence. It allows agencies to request help from telecom companies to gather electronic data for national security purposes. A special court, known as the FISA Court, reviews government requests for surveillance. Its role is to ensure investigations follow the law and respect constitutional protections, including safeguards against unreasonable searches. What Section 702 Allows Section 702 was added in 2008. It gives US intelligence agencies, including the National Security Agency, permission to collect communications of non US citizens located outside the United States without a warrant. However, this process can also collect communications of Americans who interact with those foreign targets. Critics argue this creates large scale access to private data without proper judicial approval. Civil liberties groups say this can include phone calls, messages, emails, and other digital communication. They also warn that collected data can be used in criminal cases, even when not related to national security. Why Lawmakers Extended It Temporarily US lawmakers recently approved a short extension of the law after failing to agree on a long term renewal. The extension lasts for 10 days to avoid an immediate legal gap while negotiations continue. Efforts to pass a longer renewal have struggled in the House of Representatives. Disagreements remain over how much surveillance authority should be allowed without a warrant. Why Donald Trump and Supporters Want Renewal President Donald Trump has pushed for a clean extension of the law. Supporters argue that Section 702 is essential for national security. They say it helps prevent terrorism, cyberattacks, drug trafficking, and foreign spying. Intelligence officials also claim that requiring warrants for every search would slow down urgent investigations and reduce efficiency. Why Lawmakers and Critics Are Resisting Opponents from both political parties raise concerns about privacy. They argue that the system allows mass collection of communications without a warrant. Civil rights groups say this level of surveillance can affect both Americans and foreigners. They believe stronger protections are needed to prevent misuse of personal data. Critics also want clearer limits on how intelligence agencies search through collected information. Key Debate at the Center The main issue is balance. One side prioritizes national security and fast intelligence gathering. The other side focuses on privacy rights and stricter oversight. Lawmakers continue to debate how to update the law while addressing both concerns.

Court Allows Construction to Resume on White House Ballroom Appeals Court Lifts Halt on Work A US appeals court has allowed construction work on Donald Trump’s White House ballroom project to continue. The decision gives the administration permission to move ahead with both underground and above ground development until the next hearing on 5 June. The court granted an administrative stay after the government challenged a previous order that had stopped the above ground work. That earlier ruling came from a federal judge who raised concerns about legal approval procedures. Judge Raises Legal Concerns Judge Richard Leon had earlier blocked parts of the construction. He said the project likely needed approval from Congress before starting. He also questioned claims that national security needs justified bypassing standard procedures. Leon stated that national security cannot be used to override legal requirements. His ruling followed concerns that officials may have reclassified the project to avoid oversight rules. Government Defends the Project The Trump administration argued that stopping construction would create security risks and leave a large unfinished structure near the Executive Residence. Officials also said the ballroom project includes secure underground facilities such as medical support areas and protective shelters. They claimed the project supports safety needs for high level meetings and presidential security. Donald Trump also defended the project on social media. He said the ballroom is necessary for large diplomatic gatherings and accused the court of blocking essential security improvements. He insisted that no judge should be able to stop it. Legal Challenge From Preservation Group The dispute began after a historic preservation organization filed a lawsuit. The group argued that construction started without proper approval from the National Capital Planning Commission. They also said the administration did not seek required congressional authorization before beginning work on the ballroom and underground structure. The group claimed this violated federal planning rules that protect historic government buildings. Next Steps in the Case The appeals court has not issued a final decision. Instead, it has paused the earlier ruling and allowed construction to continue for now. The next court hearing is scheduled for 5 June, where judges will review the legal and security arguments in more detail.

Nigerian Scientist Wins Global Recognition for Bat Conservation Efforts Wildfires Spark a Conservation Mission Nigerian ecologist Iroro Tanshi began her conservation work after witnessing the impact of wildfires in Afi Mountain Wildlife Sanctuary in south eastern Nigeria. During her field research, she discovered the short tailed roundleaf bat, a species not widely seen for nearly 50 years. Shortly after this discovery, she observed that uncontrolled fires were putting the species at serious risk. Instead of focusing only on research, she shifted her attention to protecting both the bats and their habitat. She identified human caused wildfires as one of the main threats to survival in the region. Community Led Fire Prevention Strategy To address the issue, Tanshi worked closely with local communities living around the sanctuary. She helped establish community fire brigades that actively monitor and prevent wildfires. Between 2022 and May 2025, these efforts stopped major fire outbreaks across a large protected area of 24700 acres. Her approach linked conservation with everyday community challenges. By addressing fire risks that directly affected local livelihoods, she built trust and participation among residents. Changing Beliefs About Bats In many parts of Nigeria, bats are often linked to superstition and witchcraft, which leads to fear and misunderstanding. Tanshi and her team worked to change these beliefs through education campaigns. They used different forms of communication, especially outreach programs for children, to explain the ecological importance of bats. She emphasized that bats play a key role in ecosystems by dispersing seeds and supporting plant growth. She also highlighted how everyday products rely on bats. For example, she explained that shea butter production benefits from bat driven seed dispersal. Global Recognition for Environmental Impact Her work earned her the Goldman Environmental Prize, a major international award recognizing grassroots environmental leadership. The award highlights her success in combining science, education, and community engagement to protect endangered wildlife. Tanshi currently works as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Washington, where she continues her focus on bat conservation.

Tragic House Explosion in Clinton County A devastating explosion destroyed a home in Lamar Township, Clinton County, Pennsylvania, on Sunday morning. Authorities confirmed that a 34 year old mother and her six children died in the incident. The children included four boys and two girls, aged between three and eleven. Emergency services arrived at about 08:30 local time after reports of an explosion. They found the house fully on fire and heavily damaged. Fire Spread Before Rescue Could Begin Firefighters reached the scene quickly but faced extreme conditions. The flames spread through the structure at high speed. Officials reported that responders could not safely enter the home to search for survivors. The intensity of the fire caused part of the house to collapse before rescue operations could begin inside the structure. Suspected Cause Under Investigation Investigators believe a propane leak inside the home may have triggered the explosion. However, they have not confirmed the final cause yet. Authorities continue to examine the site and gather evidence. Police stated that the investigation remains active and further findings will be shared once available. Witness Account of the Explosion A nearby resident described hearing a loud blast during breakfast. She said the impact was strong enough to be felt inside her home. She looked outside and saw flames coming from the house. Within a very short time, the entire structure was engulfed in fire. Other neighbors rushed out to call emergency services. Fire crews arrived soon after but reported that the fire had already consumed most of the building. Community Reaction and Ongoing Inquiry The local community expressed shock and grief over the loss of a young family. Neighbors described the fire as fast and overwhelming, leaving almost no time for intervention. Authorities continue to investigate the explosion to determine exactly what caused the propane leak and how the fire spread so quickly.
