Third British National Suspected of Hantavirus on MV Hondius Cruise as Cases Rise Outbreak Overview on MV Hondius Health officials are monitoring a hantavirus outbreak linked to the cruise ship MV Hondius. A third British national is now suspected to have the infection. The case involves a passenger currently on the remote Atlantic island of Tristan da Cunha after the ship made a stop there in mid April. Two other British men already have confirmed infections. One patient remains in a stable condition in the Netherlands after evacuation from the ship. The second patient is in intensive care in South Africa following an earlier medical transfer. One passenger has died, and the total number of confirmed cases has reached five. Confirmed and Suspected Cases Authorities confirmed that the suspected third British case is under observation and has not yet been fully diagnosed. Two additional British nationals are self isolating at home in the United Kingdom. They show no symptoms and are isolating voluntarily after possible exposure. A group of 30 passengers from around a dozen countries disembarked earlier at St Helena on 24 April. Seven of them were British citizens. Four British passengers who left the ship remain on St Helena and continue to show no symptoms while staying in contact with health teams. Evacuation and Medical Response Medical teams evacuated three patients from the ship earlier in the week. Martin Anstee, a 56 year old retired police officer and expedition guide, was flown to the Netherlands along with a 41 year old Dutch crew member and a 65 year old German passenger. He is currently in stable condition and reports that he feels well. Health authorities plan to send medical support to remote island locations where exposed passengers are being monitored. Teams are focusing on early detection and containment to prevent further spread. Passenger Monitoring and Isolation Measures Passengers who remain on board the MV Hondius will be flown back to the United Kingdom via a chartered aircraft once the ship reaches the Canary Islands. Officials confirmed that all returning passengers will need to isolate after arrival, even if they show no symptoms. Health monitoring continues for all exposed individuals across multiple locations, including Europe, Africa, and remote Atlantic islands. Operator Response and Contact Tracing The cruise operator Oceanwide Expeditions stated that the first confirmed infection was reported on 4 May. The company also confirmed that all passengers who had disembarked were contacted and informed about potential exposure risks.

Three Killed After Mount Dukono Volcano Eruption in Indonesia Deadly Eruption Hits Mount Dukono During Hiking Trip At least three hikers lost their lives after Mount Dukono erupted on Friday morning in Indonesia. The volcano sent a huge column of ash nearly 10 kilometers into the sky, creating panic among hikers and nearby residents. The victims were part of a group of 20 hikers from Singapore and Indonesia who were climbing the volcano despite safety restrictions issued by local authorities. Rescue teams later evacuated the remaining members of the group and shifted them to nearby hospitals for treatment and medical checks. Officials confirmed that two Singaporean men, aged 27 and 30, died in the incident along with a local woman from Ternate. Rescue workers have not yet recovered the bodies because continuous eruptions and dangerous terrain are slowing the operation. Rescue Operation Faces Major Challenges Local police and rescue teams said strong volcanic blasts and falling ash have made it difficult to reach the crater area where the victims are believed to be located. Authorities temporarily stopped the recovery mission after nightfall and plan to continue the search on Saturday morning. Two porters from the hiking group stayed behind on the mountain to support rescue workers during the operation. Witnesses near the volcano reported that Mount Dukono continued releasing hot ash and volcanic material throughout Friday afternoon. A local resident helping rescuers said ash clouds and rocks were still coming out from the crater area for several hours after the eruption. Officials remain concerned because the volcano has shown continuous activity in recent months. Authorities Had Already Warned Hikers Indonesian authorities had repeatedly warned people not to climb Mount Dukono because of increased volcanic activity. The volcano has erupted more than 200 times since March last year, making it one of the country’s most active volcanoes. One hiking guide present during the eruption said pressure inside the volcano had likely been building for several days. He described Friday’s eruption as extremely powerful and dangerous. Eyewitnesses also reported that several other hikers were on the mountain when the eruption happened. Officials are now investigating how visitors managed to enter the restricted area despite safety warnings. Indonesia’s Volcano Risks Remain High Indonesia sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region known for frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. The country has more than 120 active volcanoes, and authorities regularly monitor volcanic activity to reduce risks for local communities and tourists. The latest Mount Dukono tragedy highlights the dangers of ignoring official safety warnings near active volcanoes. Rescue operations are expected to continue until all victims are recovered from the mountain.

Hantavirus Outbreak Reported on Atlantic Cruise Ship Incident Overview Health authorities have reported a serious hantavirus situation on a cruise ship sailing across the Atlantic Ocean. The vessel, MV Hondius operated by Oceanwide Expeditions, was traveling from Argentina toward Cape Verde when multiple passengers fell ill. Three people have died during the incident. A Dutch married couple and a German passenger were among the deceased. Officials have confirmed two hantavirus cases so far, including a Dutch woman who later died after leaving the ship. Investigations continue to determine the exact cause of the remaining deaths. Two crew members also developed breathing related symptoms while on board. One showed mild illness and the other required urgent medical attention. What Is Hantavirus Hantavirus refers to a group of viruses carried mainly by rodents. Humans usually become infected when they breathe in particles contaminated with rodent urine, droppings, or saliva. This virus does not typically spread from person to person. Infection usually happens in environments where rodent activity is present and contaminated dust becomes airborne. People may also get infected through rodent bites or scratches, but this is less common. How the Virus Spreads The main transmission route involves inhalation of infected particles in the air. When dried rodent waste is disturbed, it can release virus particles into the environment. Risk increases in enclosed or poorly cleaned areas where rodents live or have lived. Travel environments, storage areas, or remote locations can increase exposure risk if rodent control is weak. Symptoms and Health Risks Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome This form affects the lungs. Early signs include fever, fatigue, and muscle pain. As the illness progresses, patients may experience headaches, dizziness, chills, and stomach discomfort. Breathing problems can develop suddenly. In severe cases, the condition becomes life threatening. Health data shows a high death rate once respiratory symptoms begin. Hemorrhagic Fever with Kidney Complications This form affects the kidneys and blood vessels. Symptoms may include low blood pressure, bleeding inside the body, and kidney failure. It can become severe without fast medical care. Current Cases Under Investigation A 69 year old British passenger is currently in intensive care in South Africa and has tested positive for hantavirus. The Dutch woman who died after leaving the ship also tested positive. Health officials are still testing crew members who showed respiratory symptoms. Results have not yet confirmed whether they are infected with the virus.

Robots Step In as Waste Industry Struggles to Hire Staff Recycling Plant Faces Labour Shortage Challenges A busy recycling facility in Rainham, East London, is dealing with ongoing staff shortages in a tough working environment. The site is operated by Sharp Group, a family run waste management company. The plant processes around 280,000 tonnes of mixed recycling every year. Workers sort materials on fast moving conveyor belts where items like shoes, broken electronics, and construction waste pass by constantly. The job is physically demanding and noisy. Dust is present throughout the facility, making conditions even harder for staff. Safety risks are also a concern in this sector, which reports higher injury and illness rates compared to many other industries. High Turnover Continues to Pressure Operations Keeping staff has become a major challenge. The facility reports an annual turnover rate of around 40 percent. Line supervisor Ken Dordoy explains that many workers struggle with the pace. He notes that pickers are constantly working as the belt never stops for long, which leads to frequent staff replacements. To manage fatigue, workers rotate between different sorting tasks every short interval, and the belt is occasionally paused to give brief breaks. Robots Enter Recycling Workflows To address staffing issues, the company is testing automation. A humanoid robot called Alpha is being trained to assist with sorting waste. The robot has been developed by RealMan Robotics in China and is being adapted for recycling operations by TeknTrash Robotics in the United Kingdom. Unlike traditional industrial machines, this robot is designed to move in a human like way. Developers believe this approach allows it to work within existing facilities without major redesigns. Training the Robot to Sort Waste Alpha is still in early development and is undergoing training. It is learning how to identify different items on the conveyor belt and how to pick them up correctly. A worker uses a virtual reality headset to demonstrate sorting techniques. These movements are recorded to help train the robot. According to TeknTrash founder and chief executive Al Costa, the training process focuses on two main skills. The first is recognising materials on the belt. The second is learning how to handle and lift them safely and efficiently.

Met Gala Looks Inspired by Famous Artworks The Met Gala is known for turning fashion into a form of living art. Held every year on the first Monday of May, it celebrates the opening of the Costume Institute exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. This year’s theme, “Fashion is Art,” encouraged guests to express their personal connection between clothing and artistic expression. Celebrities arrived in bold, creative outfits that reflected famous artworks from history. Each look told a visual story shaped by painters, sculptors, and cultural symbols. Rosé Channels Georges Braque’s “The Birds” Rosé, member of Blackpink and a New Zealand born singer, wore a simple yet elegant black strapless gown designed by Saint Laurent under Anthony Vaccarello. The dress appeared minimal at first glance, but the inspiration behind it added depth and meaning. Her outfit took cues from Georges Braque’s artwork The Birds (1952–53). The design included a striking bird shaped brooch, which became the highlight of her look. This detail directly connected the outfit to Braque’s artistic style and symbolism. Rosé worked closely with stylist Law Roach, often called an “image architect,” to shape the final concept. Together, they studied Saint Laurent’s past collections, including designs from spring 1998 and spring 2002 couture. During this process, they discovered how Yves Saint Laurent frequently used bird motifs, which helped refine the final direction. She later shared that the look combined classic Saint Laurent elegance with artistic storytelling inspired by fashion history and fine art. How Art Shaped the Met Gala Theme The Met Gala theme encouraged designers and celebrities to treat fashion as more than clothing. Instead, outfits became interpretations of paintings, sculptures, and historical references. Each look aimed to reflect the human body as an artistic subject across different eras. From bold symbolism to subtle references, the red carpet became a space where art history and modern fashion blended together.

The Storm in Greece Causes Widespread and Deaths Storm Erminio has hit Greece with heavy rains, high winds and floods. Early Thursday morning, a man found dead in Nea Makri near Athens. According to reports, he was found trapped underneath a vehicle after severe weather struck the area. The emergency teams were quick to respond, but the conditions continued to be difficult because of storms. Authorities confirm that conditions worsened over night as rain intensified in several areas of the country. Heavy rain and flooding disrupt daily life Storms have caused major disruptions, particularly in Attica, including Athens. The streets flooded rapidly, with water entering buildings including the local police station at Nea Makri. In just a few hours, officials reported receiving hundreds of calls from people in need. The majority of requests related to damaged or fallen property, as well as flooded streets and trees. Some areas were affected by powerful water currents that swept vehicles away. On the island Poros, a bridge collapsed as well. This added to the damages caused by the hurricane. As a precaution, the authorities closed several schools. Transport services were also affected. Ferries and travel are halted by strong winds Many passengers' travel plans were disrupted by the gale-force wind that forced ferrys to stay in port. Weather conditions may improve and some ferry services could resume, however officials continue to monitor the situation. National Weather Service has issued a warning that the weather is expected to continue being unstable, with rain, thunderstorms and possibly hail in various regions. Saharan Dust Colors the Sky Orange in Crete Crete was also affected by a different weather phenomenon. The winds carried large quantities of Saharan Dust into the region, which turned the skies a dark orange-red. The unusual conditions caused problems in air travel. As the dust filled up the air, several flights were disrupted or delayed. This type of dust is common, according to experts, but the storms that have been occurring recently has made it more difficult. Continued Weather Warnings across the Country The authorities continue to warn residents that the weather is still unstable. Emergency services stand ready to respond to any further incidents. Officials warn of the high risk of flooding in areas vulnerable to further rain. Local authorities have issued safety warnings to citizens, advising them to stay away from unnecessary travel.

Trump Delays Strike Against Iran's Energy Sector: Strategy or Signal? Donald Trump once again delayed a potential attack on Iran’s energy infrastructure, this time for 10 days. The timing of this move is critical in an ongoing conflict which has lasted for almost a month. This delay begs the question, is it a move toward diplomacy or a preparation for an escalation of violence? The Multiple Motivations of a Tactical Pause Delaying a decision does not indicate that peace is imminent. Trump uses deadlines to his advantage. He uses them to control narratives and influence markets. They also give him room to maneuver. The announcement of this latest pause came shortly after the US market closed. This timing indicates an attempt to calm down financial uncertainty. The administration could be trying to avoid sudden shocks on global markets by avoiding an immediate escalation. Washington has more time now to consider diplomatic options. Pakistan is acting as an intermediary in the indirect communication that takes place between Iran and the US. Even early talks are underway about the possibility of a neutral meeting. Expectations remain low. Both sides have made tough demands that make a rapid agreement difficult. The Military build-up continues Military preparations intensify as well, while diplomacy continues. Around 2,000 US Marines will be moving from Japan into the Middle East. California is also sending thousands of parachutists. According to reports, up to 10,000 more troops may follow. The buildup suggests that this pause is not purely diplomatic. It gives time for forces to be positioned in preparation of a possible strike. The message is also clear to Iran - accept the terms or suffer serious consequences. Strait of Hormuz Remains central Conflict has increasingly been focused on the Strait of Hormuz - a vital passageway for oil shipping around the world. Iran has limited access to the Strait of Hormuz, which affects international trade and markets for energy. The US has effectively allowed Iran to continue its current position for several more days by extending the date. Both sides are continuing limited attacks to keep tensions up without starting a full-scale conflict. Diplomacy or escalate? Trump's action keeps both options open. It creates a space for negotiation. It also strengthens the military's readiness. Short-term, nothing has changed. The military exchanges are continuing, but the threat of an escalation remains. It will be crucial to see if this temporary pause results in talks, or worsens the conflict.

Iran Focuses on Survival as War Fails to Break Its System The war involving Iran, the United States, and Israel has entered a critical phase. Despite heavy strikes and leadership losses, Iran’s system remains stable and active. Leadership Changes but System Stays Intact Early reports claimed that Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was killed during the conflict. Even so, the structure of power in Tehran has not collapsed. Key leaders are still in place. Masoud Pezeshkian continues to lead the government. Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf remains head of parliament. Abbas Araghchi still handles foreign affairs. New commanders have stepped in quickly. Most come from the same political and ideological background. Many appear more determined under wartime pressure. This shows stability rather than change. Conflicting Signals from Washington Donald Trump recently claimed that Iran’s military power has been heavily damaged. He pointed to losses in its navy, air force, missile systems, and nuclear facilities. At the same time, he warned that more attacks could follow soon. This creates a mixed message. The war is presented as nearly over, yet further escalation is still on the table. His strong statement about destroying Iran triggered anger across Iranian society. Even critics of the government reacted negatively. Instead of weakening internal support, it increased a sense of unity. No Real Sign of Regime Change Claims of regime change do not match reality. Iran’s political system continues to function without major disruption. Power still flows through the same institutions. There is no clear shift in ideology or leadership direction. The government has adapted to losses by replacing officials with similar figures. This points to resilience, not collapse. Survival Remains Iran’s Core Strategy Iran is not aiming for a traditional military victory. Its main goal is to survive. For years, Tehran has followed this approach. If it withstands pressure from stronger powers, it considers that a success. Even after weeks of conflict, its state system is still working. Its military command remains active, though weakened. From this view, Iran is achieving what it set out to do. Strategic Control Still Gives Iran Leverage Iran holds influence over key global oil routes, especially the Strait of Hormuz. Nearly one-fifth of the world’s oil supply moves through this route. This gives Iran strong leverage. It can disrupt global markets if tensions rise further. That keeps it relevant despite ongoing attacks. A Difficult Path for the United States The United States now faces a tough choice. If it pulls back, Iran may see that its survival strategy works. If it continues, the conflict could become longer and more costly without a clear win. Trump’s statements reflect this pressure. He is trying to show strength while avoiding a prolonged war. Meanwhile, Pezeshkian has said Iran has the will to end the conflict. This appears to be a calculated message rather than a sign of weakness.

Stanford University wins legal battle over Mao secretary's diaries Stanford University has been granted permission to keep the diaries kept by Li Rui. She was a former Mao Zedong secretary. The dispute over a historic collection Li Rui kept meticulous diaries over a period of decades. He was known in later life for his criticisms of the Chinese Communist Party. The writings range from 1938 until 2019 and offer a unique, first-hand view of China's history. Li Rui's daughter Li Nanyang was asked by her father to give his papers to Hoover Institution before his death. In 2014, while still living, she began to transfer the material. Zhang Yuzhen challenged this decision after Li Rui died. The lawsuit was filed by Zhang Yuzhen, who claimed that the documents had been sent overseas without authority. The Court supports Li Rui’s original intent Li Rui's intention of moving his works out of China was clearly stated by the court. He was afraid that the authorities would censor, alter, or destroy his writings. He entrusted the task of sharing and preserving his work to his daughter out of concern. The judges concluded that his donation was in accordance with the wishes of the donor. The documents are now accessible for historians and researchers. Tiananmen and other sensitive accounts Li Rui’s notes about the crackdown on Tiananmen are among the most important parts of this collection. The events were witnessed from an adjacent building, and he described them with great detail. In his writings, he describes soldiers firing on protesters as well as armored cars breaking through barricades. The incident was dubbed "Black Weekend" by him to emphasize its impact. The records are important, because the public is not allowed to discuss this event in China. The Global Importance of the Diaries Hoover Institution: This ruling is a significant step towards protecting historical truth. Condoleezza rice, the head of the Hoover Institution, stated that the ruling guarantees free access to the one of the largest personal archives about modern China. This collection contains not only diary entries, but also photographs, notes from meetings, poetry, and letters. They provide a deep understanding of the internal processes and discussions within the Communist Party. The Case at Hand The case illustrates the tension that exists between political control and historical preservation. The court ensured scholars could study the documents without restriction by keeping them in the United States. This also shows Li Rui’s long-standing stance. He was respected within the party but did not shy away from criticizing its leaders, such as Xi Jinping

South Sudan attack kills more than 70 miners as blame game intensifies A deadly attack near Juba shocks the nation After armed attackers attacked a South Sudanese mining site, at least 74 miner's lives were lost. This incident occurred over the weekend at Jebel Iraq in a mineral rich area southwest of Juba, the capital. This attack has caused outrage throughout the nation. The authorities confirmed that gunmen killed dozens of workers on the construction site. Many other people fled in fear for their lives. Government and Opposition Exchange accusations As both government officials and the opposition blamed one another for the murders, tensions rose quickly. The Sudan People's Liberation Movement in Opposition, a group linked to the suspended first vice president Riek Makar, condemned this attack. The group blamed government forces for the murders. Officials on the other hand, rejected these claims. Paulino Lukudu Obede expressed his shock and anger at the incident. The killings were described as inhumane and brutal by him. He did not identify any group as responsible. David Yau Yau, Deputy Minister of Information, later blamed SPLM-IO. Later, Deputy Information Minister David Yau Yau blamed the SPLM-IO. Ongoing Conflict Fuels Violence South Sudan is still battling internal conflict. In different parts of the country, several armed groups are still active. The National Salvation Front is one of the groups that operates in Central Equatoria. No group has claimed official responsibility for these killings, despite the allegations. Uncertainty has led to concerns over security in areas rich in minerals. Due to the economic importance of these areas, they often attract armed group. Government Promises Action The authorities have promised an investigation and to bring the perpetrators to justice. Officials have said they will take steps to protect civilians and prevent future violence. The situation is complicated by the ongoing tensions between political parties and conflicts. Senegal anti-LGBT law: jail terms doubled to 10 years Senegal's new law targets same-sex relationships. The legislation was approved by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, who increased the maximum sentence for the same-sex act to 10 years. This includes what the authorities refer to as "promotion of homosexuality". It includes the public expression of homosexuality, as well as advocacy or financial support by individuals and organizations. If found guilty, those who are convicted can be sentenced to prison for between 3 and 7 years. The Government defends its Decision This law was an important campaign promise made by Ousmane sonko, Prime Minister of Senegal and President Faye. Last month, lawmakers passed the law with a strong majority. The National Assembly voted 135 times in favor, with no opposition and only three votes against. The decision, according to officials in Senegal, reflects the public's opinion. The officials rejected the criticism of international groups, and justified their decision as being in line with national values. Increasing arrests and legal crackdown The bill was introduced by the authorities after an increase in arrests allegedly linked to same-sex relationships. Existing law in Senegal prohibits such conduct. Police arrested twelve men in February. Among them were a journalist, two prominent public figures, and a businessman. The prosecution accused them of "acts against the nature," which is a common term in these cases. Global Reactions and Human Rights Concerns Global organisations have strongly criticised the new law. Volker Turk called this legislation "deeply concerning" and warned it violates fundamental human rights. Human Rights Watch and other groups have reported a growing anti-LGBT sentiment in Senegal. The report noted that the lawmakers tried increasing penalties before, in 2022 or 2024. A Wider Trend in Africa The Senegal has not been the only country to tighten laws on LGBTQ+ groups. In recent years, several African countries took similar measures. Uganda will pass one of its strictest laws in 2023. It allows the death penalty for certain crimes. Burkina Faso banned same-sex act last year after Mali. Ghana has also considered reintroducing controversial legislation that, according to activists, could endanger basic freedoms and rights.
