Tragic accident on the Inca Trail
An Australian tourist, Matthew Cameron Paton, 52, died after falling into a deep ravine while hiking the Inca Trail in Peru. The incident happened near the 50 Gradas section of the route close to Machu Picchu.
He had arrived in Cusco about 12 days earlier with his wife and joined a guided group trek on the historic mountain path.
How the fall happened
Local police said Paton slipped while crossing a wooden bridge on the trail. A railing reportedly gave way as he tried to steady himself.
He fell down a steep slope estimated at around 300 meters. Search teams later found his body after an extensive rescue operation in rugged terrain.
Officials from Cusco confirmed that emergency mountain rescue units were deployed immediately after he was reported missing.
Rescue operation and investigation
The High Mountain Rescue Unit in Cusco recovered his body on Thursday. Authorities said the recovery took place in a difficult section of the trail near Inca Trail.
Police stated that they are now investigating the condition of the bridge and the circumstances that led to the fall. Early reports suggest possible structural damage to the railing.
Police service and family tributes
Matthew Paton served with Victoria Police since 2009 and was due to begin a new role as senior sergeant soon.
His family described him as deeply devoted to his wife of 31 years and their three children. They said he had always wanted to travel to Peru and were devastated by his sudden death.
Senior officials in Victoria Police also paid tribute, highlighting his long service, professionalism, and commitment to helping colleagues.
Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirmed that consular support is being provided to the family.
