Caitlin Clark Makes History for Team USA
Clark needed only one game to make her mark on the World Cup record book.
Her 11 assists set a new record for an American player in a Women’s World Cup debut. Alyssa Thomas previously held the mark with nine assists in her 2022 debut against Belgium.
Clark also achieved another notable milestone. She became the first player from any country to record at least 10 assists without a turnover in a Women’s World Cup game since official assist and turnover records began in 1994.
Her 11 assists also rank among the highest single game totals in World Cup history during that period.
Clark Changes the Game Off the Bench
Team USA coach Kara Lawson saw Clark change the pace as soon as she entered the game.
Clark delivered four assists during her first four minutes on the court. Her passing created open looks for teammates and forced China to adjust its defense.
When China pressured Clark outside, she attacked the lane. She then found teammates in good scoring positions.
China also used a zone defense to protect 7 foot 3 center Zhang Ziyu. Clark quickly identified gaps in the defense and used them to create more chances.
That decision making helped Team USA control the game from the opening minutes.
Team USA Gets Contributions Across the Roster
Clark wasn’t the only American player who produced on Friday.
Paige Bueckers and Rhyne Howard each scored 14 points. Jackie Young added 12 points.
All 12 Team USA players scored during the victory.
The Americans took a 27 to 14 lead after the first quarter. China never recovered. Team USA later pushed its advantage to 35 points before finishing with a 33 point win.
The victory also extended Team USA’s World Cup winning streak to 31 games
Why Caitlin Clark’s Performance Matters
Clark didn’t need to take a large number of shots to influence the game.
Instead, she used her passing, movement, and court vision to create opportunities for the entire lineup.
That gives Lawson another option for managing the rotation. Clark can provide scoring and playmaking while playing alongside some of the best players in international basketball.
Her debut also showed that Team USA’s second unit can maintain pressure against strong opponents.
Caitlin Clark’s Next Team USA Games
Team USA will play Italy in its second Group D game on Sunday at 2:45 p.m. ET.
The Americans will then face Czechia to finish group play on Monday.
Clark will look to build on her impressive opening performance as Team USA continues its World Cup campaign.
With her ability to create chances for teammates, Clark has already given Team USA another valuable offensive option.
