MANILA: The $400 million concessional loan from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) will help rebuild homes and community facilities in Sindh that were destroyed by the catastrophic floods that struck the region in 2022.
The goal of the Sindh Emergency Housing Reconstruction Project is to promote livelihood recovery and rebuild community infrastructure and residences damaged by flooding while enhancing community resilience to natural disasters brought on by climate change.
ADB has committed to providing $1.5 billion in total support from 2023 to 2025 to expedite Pakistan’s flood recovery, and this project is a crucial component of the bank’s multidimensional response to the country’s flood disaster.
“This project will help rebuild homes and communities, and restore livelihood and basic services in Sindh, the province most affected by the devastating 2022 floods,” said the Asian Development Bank.”It is part of ADB’s extensive support to help Pakistan recover from the disaster which affected 33 million people and damaged houses and infrastructure across the nation.”
Approximately 2.1 million houses were either completely destroyed or severely damaged during the 2022 floods, accounting for 83% of the total damage done to housing.
Even after two years, a large number of victims continue to live in subpar, makeshift shelters without access to basic amenities like electricity, water, or sanitary facilities.
250,000 homes will be rebuilt with designs that are environment-responsive and multi-hazard resilient thanks to the project’s conditional monetary awards.
