Gachagua has been charged with undermining the administration, fostering ethnically divided politics, fueling the fatal protests that shook the nation in June, and engaging in corruption by the president’s loyalists in parliament.
In the midst of a severe economic and financial crisis, Kenya is experiencing instability in the government as a result of the power struggle.
In the 2022 election, after defeating former prime minister Raila Odinga in a fiercely contested battle, Ruto selected Gachagua to be his running mate.
Gachagua, who helped rally support for Ruto, is from the very electable Mount Kenya region.
However, since members of Odinga’s party joined the administration following the youth-led demonstrations that compelled Ruto to back down from raising taxes, the political landscape has shifted, and the deputy president appears to be becoming more and more alone.
Lawmakers claim they are getting ready to present a motion in parliament demanding the start of impeachment procedures against him.
“I have signed it already,” declared Kimani Ichung’wah, the majority leader.
The deputy president’s allies have tried in vain to stop the motion from being heard at the High Court on multiple occasions.
Several politicians told local media that the one-third threshold has been passed, with nearly 250 having already approved the move to table.
