Reggae has lost one of its brightest icons. Jimmy Cliff, the Grammy-winning artist and celebrated actor, has passed away at the age of 81 due to complications from pneumonia.

The heartbreaking news was shared by his wife, Latifa Chambers, in an emotional Instagram post on November 24. She revealed that Cliff “crossed over after a seizure followed by pneumonia,” officially marking the end of a monumental career that inspired millions around the world.

Chambers expressed her gratitude to fans, friends, and music collaborators for their unwavering support throughout Cliff’s lifelong journey in music. She also thanked the medical teams who cared for him, acknowledging their dedication during this difficult time. In a touching tribute to her late husband, she wrote: “Jimmy, my darling, may you rest in peace. I will honor and follow your wishes.”

Born James Chambers in St. James Parish, Jamaica, Cliff began his singing journey at just six years old. As a teen, he moved to Kingston and adopted the name “Cliff,” symbolizing his ambition to reach new heights in music.

Jimmy Cliff went on to create some of reggae’s most timeless classics, including “Hurricane Hattie,” “Many Rivers to Cross,” and “The Harder They Come.” His role as Ivan Martin in the 1972 film The Harder They Come cemented his status as an international reggae icon. In 1993, his rendition of “I Can See Clearly Now” became another worldwide hit, reaching No. 18 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Throughout his illustrious career, Cliff earned two Grammy Awards, seven nominations, and was proudly inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010. His music, message, and legacy will continue to influence generations.

Rest in power, Jimmy Cliff. Your music lives forever.
