According to a legal expert, Alec Baldwin’s new accusations related to the Rust shooting were “botched.”
The 65-year-old actor-producer was charged with involuntary manslaughter anew this week by a grand jury in New Mexico.
The case stems from the moment director Joel Souza was injured and cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was killed when Alec accidentally fired a revolver while he was aiming it at her during a rehearsal for the film in October 2021.
“I’ve gotten a lot of questions about this case because it’s really been botched by the prosecution,” attorney Neama Rahmani recently told US Weekly.
Unrelated to the case, Naema provided the following explanation:
“They charged Alec Baldwin with involuntary manslaughter, which carries a maximum 18-month sentence, as well as a five-year firearms enhancement, which, if proven true, would land Alec in state prison in New Mexico for at least five years.”
She went on to say that since the weapons enhancement was “retroactive,” meaning it did not exist when Halyna died, charging the actor under the law would be “unconstitutional.”
Alec has been directed to appear on February 1 before a New Mexico judge in order to make a plea.
