El Mencho: Deadly Operation Captured
Over 70 people were killed in the violent aftermath of the attack and operation. Among the victims were 25 Mexican National Guard members.
El Mencho was located by security forces in the state of Jalisco, in the town Tapalpa. Mexico’s Defense Minister said that investigators.
There was a firefight between Mexican Special Forces and cartel gunmen.
The cartel grew beyond Jalisco to several other states under his leadership. It developed a powerful international network centered on drug trafficking and production.
Fear Spreads Beyond Jalisco
Violence spread from Puerto Vallarta to the surrounding areas, despite authorities clearing most roadblocks by Monday.
Juan Pablo Hernandez said that officials were working with the neighboring states in order to find and capture those inmates who had escaped.
US Reaction and Rewards
El Mencho was branded a major security threat by the Trump Administration. The US authorities offered a reward of 15 million dollars for any information that led to his arrest.
Security experts have warned that his death could lead to further unrest among rival cartels and factions.
