Senator Irfan Siddiqui, a senior leader of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), stated that party leader and three-time former prime minister Nawaz Sharif “wasn’t ready” to lead the nation as prime minister for a fourth time since he has no intention of winning the position this time.
“Nawaz chose not to become prime minister,” Siddiqui stated on Wednesday’s episode of Aaj Shahzeb Khanzada Kay Sath on Geo News.
His comments come after the country’s second prime minister, Shehbaz Sharif, of the PML-N, was elected by the party after Nawaz decided not to contest for the coveted position after returning to the nation after a four-year self-imposed exile from London.
The party, which had been longing for the seasoned politician to make a comeback, had designed its election campaign around the politician, positioning him as a savior who could handle the nation’s current problems and steer it in the direction of prosperity.
But after the polls on February 8 revealed that the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), the PML-N, and independent candidates backed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf were unable to win a simple majority in the National Assembly, the PML-N put forward Shehbaz as their prime ministerial candidate.
