Olu Jacobs Dies at 84

Olu Jacobs, whose full name was Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, built a career that crossed theatre, television and film.

His family described him as the “Lion of Lufodo” in the announcement of his death. They also reflected on his life and asked the public to give the family space to grieve.

A Career That Spanned More Than Five Decades

Jacobs trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. He later worked in British theatre and appeared in television productions and international films before becoming a major figure in Nigerian cinema.

His career covered several areas of the performing arts. He worked as an actor, producer and stage director. His work also included productions outside Nigeria.

After returning to Nigeria, Jacobs became an important figure in the growth of Nollywood. He appeared in many Nigerian productions and became known to several generations of viewers.

Major Awards and National Recognition

Jacobs received several major honours during his career.

In 2007, he won the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role. He also received other industry honours during his career.

In 2011, the Nigerian government awarded him the national honour of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic, or MFR, for his contribution to the country’s film industry.

Olu Jacobs and Joke Silva’s Contribution to the Arts

Jacobs and Joke Silva also worked together outside acting. The couple co founded the Lufodo Group and the Lufodo Academy of Performing Arts.

The organisation has supported film production, distribution and training for performers. Through this work, the couple contributed to the development of Nigeria’s creative industry.

Their work extended beyond their own screen careers. They also helped create opportunities for people seeking professional training in the performing arts.

His Final Years

Jacobs gradually stepped away from public appearances in his later years.

In 2021, Joke Silva publicly discussed his diagnosis of dementia with Lewy bodies. She described the condition as a progressive illness affecting the brain.

The family had also faced false reports about Jacobs’ death in previous years. In June 2024, his son publicly confirmed that the actor was still alive after another death rumour circulated online.
