In an effort to impose new roti rates, the Punjabi government closed down dozens of tandoors and fined hundreds more for failing to offer naan at Rs. 20 and roti at Rs. 16.
Many tandoor owners attended a conference chaired by Aftab Gul, president of the Muttahida Nanbai Association, and concluded that charging Rs. 20 for nan and Rs. 16 for roti amounted to “economic murder” for the tandoor owners.
The owners of the tandoor made the announcement on May 8 that they would not welcome customers under any circumstances for an extended period of time.
According to Aftab Gul, the Punjab government’s planned new tariffs for roti and nan could not be implemented.
