ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court scheduled a hearing on a petition to invalidate the February 8 general elections on Monday, February 19, according to Geo News.
A three-member bench, led by Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa, will hear the petition. The court will also include Justices Musarrat Hilali and Muhammad Ali Mazhar.
The Supreme Court has issued a notice to the complainant, Ali Khan. The petitioner has requested that elections be held again due to claims of rigging.
Several political groups, notably the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), Jamaat-e-Islami, and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F), have accused the general elections of being rigged.
The final results of the February 8 polls were delayed significantly, prompting concerns about electoral transparency.
The United States has also asked Pakistani authorities to conduct an independent investigation into allegations of irregularities and rigging during the country’s February 8 general elections using its legal system.
The SHC establishes a tribunal to hear rigging complaints.
Meanwhile, the chief judge of the Sindh High Court (SHC) has convened a tribunal to consider cases alleging cheating in the February 8 general elections. The SHC Registrar made the declaration in a notification sent on Friday.
According to the notification, the major seat of the high court would hear election petitions in Karachi. The announcement stated that the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) Sindh has issued a letter requesting the formation of a tribunal to hear cases pertaining to rigging in elections.
Moreover, two benches have been established for the Karachi division. Bench one will comprise Justice Muhammad Kareem Khan Agha, and bench two will comprise Justice Adnan Iqbal Chaudhry.
