After 58 years in broadcasting, Walker will leave Sounds Of The 70s on Sunday afternoons and The Rock Show on Friday nights at the end of this month.
The host suffers from pulmonary fibrosis, a condition that causes lung scarring and makes breathing more challenging.
Walker indicated in a speech earlier this year that his illness was “terminal” and “progressively worsening.”
During Sunday’s Sounds of the 70s, the 79-year-old celebrity read aloud a letter from a listener whose father had loved the show but had passed away in 2022 owing to it.
The host, who was born in Birmingham, continued, saying to his audience, “That brings me to my very sad statement.
I’ve had to decide to stop my work after 58 years because of the difficulties I’ve had doing the show and maintaining a professional quality appropriate for Radio 2. These issues have become increasingly tough.
“Therefore, on October 27, I will be performing my final Sounds of the 70s, therefore I will try my hardest to give the final three shows my best.
